Barack Obama reverses on offshore drilling

December 1, 2010

In a damaging move for our nation's energy security and economy, the Interior Department said it would not propose oil exploration off the Atlantic and Pacific coastlines or the eastern Gulf of Mexico for at least seven years.

As reported by the Washington Post, Virginia's Governor McDonnell said "This decision comes in the midst of one of the toughest economies in our history.....The cost of today's decision will be seen in major lost job opportunities, surrendered economic growth, and increased dependence on foreign sources of energy, from nations often hostile to American interests."

In the Orlando Sentinel, Florida's Governor-Elect, Rick Scott said, "We want to become [energy] independent in this country. And part of that is looking to see if we could do off-shore drilling safely. So a more logical approach from my standpoint would have been to say ‘what’s the logical way of doing this, what’s the path we are going to get to be able to do it’ rather than saying point-blank we’re not going to do it … I absolutely oppose what they’ve done."
